How to fix Roblox scripts with AI

Every Roblox developer spends a large share of their time debugging. A script errors, a button does nothing, a remote fires on the wrong side. The fastest way to fix these is a tight loop: see the error, give the agent the facts, review the fix, and test again. This guide shows how to run that loop with an AI coding agent that can see your place.

Why debugging with a chat window is slow

Pasting a script into a general chatbot works for tiny problems. It breaks down quickly because the bug is rarely in the one script you pasted. The real cause might be a RemoteEvent defined in ReplicatedStorage, a LocalScript that runs before a child loads, or a property that a different script keeps resetting. The model cannot see any of that, so it guesses.

An agent that is connected to Studio can read the scripts around the failing one, look at the instances they touch, and read the Output console. That is the difference between a plausible guess and a grounded fix.

The debug loop

  1. Reproduce. Run the game and trigger the bug. Note exactly what you did.
  2. Collect the facts. Copy the red error text and its line number from Output, and write one sentence about what you expected.
  3. Ask for a fix. Give the agent the facts and ask it to explain the cause before it edits.
  4. Review the diff. Read the proposed change. Small, targeted diffs are a good sign.
  5. Retest. Run again and confirm the error is gone and the feature works.

A prompt template that works

This feature should [expected behavior]. When I [action], Output shows [error text]. Find the cause, explain it in one or two sentences, then fix it. Keep the existing structure.

Asking for an explanation first has two benefits. You learn what went wrong, and you can spot a wrong diagnosis before it turns into a wrong edit.

Common Luau problems and what to tell the agent

"attempt to index nil with ..."

Something you expected to exist does not. Often a child has not replicated yet, or a name is misspelled. Tell the agent which object you expected and where it should live. It can check the real hierarchy instead of trusting the script.

"Infinite yield possible on WaitForChild"

A script is waiting for an object that never appears. Mention whether the script runs on the client or the server. The agent can check whether the object is created on the other side.

Remotes that do nothing

Check three things: the RemoteEvent exists in a place both sides can see, the server has an OnServerEvent connection, and the client actually fires it. Ask the agent to trace the event from sender to receiver across scripts.

Logic that works once and then stops

This is often a debounce that never resets, or a connection that is disconnected too early. Describe the sequence: "works the first time, not the second."

Let the agent verify

A fix that compiles is not a fix that works. Ask the agent to run the place and check. It can start Play, read the console, press keys or move the character, and take a screenshot. If the error is still there, it sees the same output you would and tries again.

Habits that make debugging faster

  • Fix one error at a time. Several fixes in one prompt make it hard to tell which one worked.
  • Say client or server. It narrows the search immediately.
  • Share what still happens. After a failed fix, say what changed. "Now it errors on line 40 instead" is more useful than starting over.
  • Keep diffs small. If a fix rewrites an entire script, ask for a smaller change.
  • Use Ask mode for diagnosis. When you only want an explanation, a read-only mode guarantees nothing is edited.

When the bug is not in the script

Sometimes the code is fine and the place is wrong: a Part is anchored when it should not be, a CollisionGroup is missing, a UI element has the wrong ZIndex. Because Kiwari can read and change instances as well as scripts, you can describe the symptom and let it inspect the properties.
